Tutti a casa!

Insomma, interpenetrazioni a parte, ci siamo divertiti!

*****
Last Friday, we tried  Field of Battle (2nd edition) rules with a clash in the GNW. I must premise that I was pretty biased on this regulation because years ago I played Piquet, of which this regulation is the "son", and I did not like it at all for its complete ungovernability. Here is another thing, maybe the time is more ripe for a regulation card driven than they were at the time, but the system is running well and is fun, completely changing the philosophy of "IGoUGo" which is typical of most Regulations wargame currently in circulation. The players are constantly involved both during its active phase and in  the opponent one. The results are often unpredictable, but the large number of throws of the dice does not cause unacceptable consequences from an historical point of view. For a review and critique of the regulation and its operation will refer to the site Blunders on Danube.

Sure, something
leaves a little perplexed, as the ease of interpenetration of units, virtually unlimited (doubts already expressed elsewhere by other players), especially for certain periods that may actually be exaggerated, given that the scale of the unit is the battalion for the infantry and regiment  for cavallerie. So, the cavalry can charge passing through two lines of infantry, or infantry can fire lines carrying an exchange of different units a little bit out of history. However, the rule is quite easy to limit or eliminate without major problems, so that in the adaptations to the different historical periods, in some cases is already being modified by the Author. But look what happened to our testing: for the Swedes, 3 Command groups, one with 4 units of infantry and two cavalry, each with 4 units, no artillery, as in (worst) tradition of Charles XII. For the Russians, 4 Command Groups, two of infantry, each of three units of infantry and a battery of light artillery, one cavalry (three units of dragoons and one of Horse Grenadiers ) and a one-artillery, three batteries of of medium artillery. The Russians defended themselves with the  artillery placed in a redoubt placed in the center of the field, the infantry on both sides of the redoubt and the cavalry  behind the right wing. The Swedes, who see the enemy deployment partly in advance, deploy the infantry on the right wing and all the cavalry on the left wing. No one to face the defended redoubt. The land is flat but interrupted by some fields and a small marsh near the center of the battlefield. The Swedes won the initiative (2 cards) and immediately attack, head down, with the dragoons vs the Russian infantry on the right wing , but the first volley of infantry, plus the effects of artillery is lethal and the attack rejected.More fortunate was the cavalry attack against the Russians with weaponsunloaded , but only managed to repel the infantry. On the right begins the attack of the Swedish infantry, squeezed between the marsh and a cultivated area. It's up to the Russian cavalry counterattack on dragons tested by fire, the cavalry remain locked in melee with mixed results.Other 2 cards each, continues the attack of the Swedish infantry, attempting an assault on the Russian lines: "Ga Pa!"Even here the focus is efficient but the Swedes do not stop. However, they are outnumbered and even here the units remain mired in a inconclusive melèe.The Swedish cavalry attacks a Russian battery unloaded and sweep it away, but loses points for pursuing. Meanwhile the Russian line which had retreated, was reorganized, reload the weapons and fires on the Swedish cavalry, repulsing it.This time the Russians win the initiative (5 cards!) and the artillery fire reduces badly the wing of the Swedish infantry that soon sees en route two units of four. In addition,  the attack on the center  by Russian dragoons  seems to give good results and most of the command of Swedish dragoons is broken or in poor condition. The moral of the Swedish Army drops alarmingly and quickly reaches the critical point! All seems lost, even  because, up until now, the dices have not been generous with the Scandinavians. But here we see the qualities of the Swedish Army: beautifully withstands the test of moral army and counterattacks with the cavalry. The Russian Horse Grenadiers  are wiped out in one shot and infantry continues to reject one after another the Russian regiments, with serious losses. Eventually even the Russian army reached the point of morale of the army and at the first attempt, it fails the test. Everyone at home! A minor victory for the Swedes, very painful.Game time: three hours. Only one deck of cards has been played equivalent to a round of play (about two actual hours).Only one change to the rules, irrelevant to the game, was the size of the infantry and cavalry, on three bases instead of four under the rules .In short, apart from interpenetration, we had fun! I recommend it: a suggestion for European players. If you want to buy, I recommend you to contact Caliver Books rather than the American publisher: P&P  are absolutely too high! Finally, I must thank Sandro Matteoni for insisting so I tried this rules, after the disappointment of Piquet: Sandro, never wrong, you're a real guarantee!

The Last argument of kings

As I wrote in a former recent post, we tested Black Powder rules with the emendments proposed by  Last Hussar's barrack.
Now,  Warlord games present "The last agument of kings" , which are the official rules for XVIII century wars with Black Powder system. The rule set includes a scenary and Army lists for the GNW, too. (By the way, the proposed scenario, Holowczyn, is the same we played some time ago with Black powder).
New rules are collected in very few pages, while the main body of the book is composed by Army lists and scenarios for
  • The War of the Spanish Succession – the Battle of Blenheim (1704)
  • The Great Northern War – the Battle of Holowczyn (1708)
  • The Austro-Turkish Wars – the Battle of Petrovardin (1716)
  • The War of the Austrian Succession – the Battle of Fontenoy (1745)
  • The Wars of the English Succession – the 1745 Rebellion
  • The Seven Years’ War – the Battle of Hundorf (1762)
  • War in the Colonies – The French Indian War & The War in India.
Very first impression, confirms what we have written in the former post. However, at a first glance again, the GNW army list presents at least a serious fault, including among Russian units, some Curassiers!

As usual, the print and image quality remains very high.

Come diceva Totò,... a me, piace!

We have tested a first game using Black Powder emendments written for the Spanish Succession War by Last Hussar's Barracks . These emendments improve a lot some points of Black Powder, such as the Move Sequence, but it should need some more adjustment to give Swedish troops their typical Elan.

Black Powder is a very fun set rule and it proved to be very easy to learn, but it works better as guidelines for expert players that like to change rules they do not like. And forget pret-a-porter army lists!
But, we like it!

Tende e Cannoni - Tents and guns

After a long silence, here we are again. Wargame has brought us in differents places and ages but we have not forget the Great Northern War.

During this time we have carried on painting soldiers and testing rule sets. So, today we take again from where we stopped, or the swedish artillery set from Zvezda. A very nice set as always from the Russian group, it includes 3 light guns, a medium one and an howitzer, a train and a caisson. The box includes 6 horses for these trains ad allows to you the choice to give 4 horses to the trai or to the caisson.
As in the other artillery sets, there is plenty of gunners, more than a base can host. There is a magnificent officer on foot, that I have set aside to include in a future command base. 3 powder barrels and 3 buckets complete the set.

In the meanwhile we have also prepared three encampment bases that fit for other periods and scales. The tends come (perhaps) from some sets of Atlantic (the Italian manifacturer from seventies) and the cart from the Cossack box of Zvezda. To complete the camp we have add some barrels and wood boxes coming from whoknows where... The figure in the photos is the above foot Swedish artillery officer.

warsoflouisxiv.

After a very short waiting, Zvezda announced the release of the new box about GNW, Russian Dragoons. We don't have any images of the miniatures but, fom tha box picture, it seems that all of them wear tricorne hat. Maybe it would have been better to make them wearing the pokalem hat, instead. It would have had more sense, even to differentiate them from Swdish dragoons , that have virtually the same uniform, colours apart. Anyway, a new box is never a trouble, even if I deem this is the one that goes to complete GNW range.

Errata corrige:
our friend Sir William the Aged , kindly informs us that the real number of miniatures in this box is different from the one we have previously reported (and that was taken from another blog). You can read all about the box in the great blog
warsoflouisxiv.

Thank you, Sir William.

Gli ultimi Streltzi - Last Streltzis

In last topics we spoke about the resistance of the Streltsi in the Russian redoubt. So who were the Streltsi (or Streltzi, or Strelzi)? The Streltsi (Russian: “musketeer”) formed a military corps established in the middle of the 16th century that formed the bulk of the Russian army for about 100 years, provided the tsar’s bodyguard, and, at the end of the 17th century, exercised considerable political influence. Originally composed of commoners, the streltsy had become a hereditary military caste by the mid-17th century. Living in separate settlements (slobody), they performed police and security duties in Moscow and in the border towns where they were garrisoned; they often also engaged in trades and crafts. In 1681 there were about 55,000 streltsy, 22,500 of whom were stationed in Moscow. The streltsy became discontented and unreliable in the second half of the 17th century after the government began paying them in land instead of money and grain. They then became involved in the succession struggle begun in 1682 between rival partisans of the half brothers Peter I and Ivan V. Supporting Ivan, they staged a revolt against the Naryshkin family (the relatives of Peter’s mother, who had assumed actual power), named both Ivan and Peter tsars, and made Ivan’s sister Sophia regent. In 1698, having unsuccessfully attempted to unseat Peter I (the Great) and restore Sophia to the regency (Peter had displaced her in 1689), the streltsy were forcibly disbanded by the tsar, with hundreds of them being executed or deported. Though revived briefly by Peter to participate in the Great Northern War (1702), the corps was gradually absorbed into the regular army thereafter.

They were armed with a musket and a large axe named "Berdiche", which they used as a rest for the firing musket. Each regiment wore a different colour pattern of the uniform. I strongly suggest to see this site, which contains fundamental information both about uniforms and flags. About miniatures, as usual, Zvezda have no match. They are very nice and colourful and, even you can find them often unuseful, they cannot be missing on your table, at least in the battles up to 1698. "The company Strelets have been producing bonus figures in many of their sets which portray these troops, so that certainly adds a lot of variety, although Zvezda clearly have a different style and quality (from Plastic Soldier Review).
In the pictures are reported Streltsy from Moscow' regiments n. 1 (in red), 2 (in light grey) and 6 (in yellow).

Com'è andata a finire... - How it has gone...

Third and last part of the game: are you anxious to know how did it ended? Here we are.

At the sunset, the situation was still open, but the Swedish army was trying hard to conquer definitively the redoubt and the crossroad that controlled the road to the village that was held by the Russians. However the Streltzy and the Russians Line Regiments were decided to fight hard.
With the last ray of the sun the Swedish attack column launched its last desperate assault and it seemed an easy task against a disordered Streltzi unit. However, the last fire coming from the Russians probably killed all the officers of the enemy because as a consequence of a really bad launch of 2d6 = 11, the Swedish retreated, while the Strelzy (2d6=4!) maintained their position.
So, with 2 objectives conquered by each armies, both the right wings on retreat, the final result was an absolute DRAW!

The game has been really interesting to test the rules, that confirmed to be very good. Well, if you are looking for a complete control on your units, you can change rule set. In the early stages of the game you can control easily large groups of units, but when the smoke covers the battlefield and the formations are broken by enemy fire and melees, to control the whole army is really impossible (I like that!) and you can give effective orders only to very few units. The other will tend to act on their own, sometimes advancing or retreating, sometimes without an apparent reason too! I deem this represent a really realistic simulation of the chaos that probably was on a '700 battlefield.

Very soon a new game! Stay tuned!

I Russi tengono duro - Russians hold on

(continua)
At the end of the second evening, the game is still open. Notwithstanding the retreat of its right wing, the Russian army holds on. Fightings in the central redoubt have been very hard and the redoubt was lost and conquered many times.
On the Russian right, a single btg fought alone against Swedish hordes. The Swedish right wing , formed by 4 Dragoon units, obliged the Russian left wing and part of the center to be more quiet, but at the end of the evening it payed for the artillery fire and for a command that has not been very lucky nor resolute.
While smokes makes very difficult to give orders to the Commanders, the evening ended with both right wings retreating. To next Friday!
(to be continued)

I Sassoni della Mars - Saxons from Mars

Mars has announced the future release of a box of Saxon Infantry for the GNW. This could be a good new, because Saxons had an important role in the GNW (but not in the Poltava campaign).
However, previous releases of Mars, i.e. Swedish infantry, were really horrible!
So, let's hope in a new "Mars style" !

An Update: here is the back of the box with painted miniatures.

First battle of 2010 with GNW and Ga Pa rule set.
Few Super heroes Swedish vs. Green Russian Hordes.
However the day is not yet of the Swedish army, that is fighting to take the redoubt defended by guns and Strelets.
A large table permits to deploy the wings and the center of the armies, allowing some manouvres, too.
Next Friday, we'll know the winner!

Brutte notizie dalla Strelets - Bad news from Strelets

  • Early Russian Infantry
  • Guard of Charles XII
  • Army of Peter the Great

Plastic soldier review reports that:
"... three sets have now disappeared from the Strelets futures list. All these Great Northern War sets...
  • Early Russian Infantry
  • Guard of Charles XII
  • Army of Peter the Great
...have apparently been abandoned."

Well, as I promised, here are some images of the Russian Artillery from Zvezda.
Miniatures are really nice and all the piece that compose guns, trains and the arms of the artillerymen are very detailed but so perfect that you can mount them even without glue.

The artillerymen are so many that you can use them to compose different groups, e.g. with the single officer (you'll see it in a next post) or in pushing the caisson. But if you prefer, you can really crowd a wargame base all around a single gun!

There are 5 guns: 3 of them are bataillons guns, 3 lb., one is a 6 lb. and one is an heavy mortar.
Then you'll find a caisson and a limber for heavier guns. For ligther guns there are some horses more that can carry them without the limber (but I preferred to have a gun in battery, so you'll no see it, here).
And more, there are 3 powder barrels, too.

Even if Plastic Soldier Review (really over-particular, this time) found something to criticize about it, IMHO this box deserves all your attention, for it's really a good set.

As a further information, Russian used very original carriages for their guns, expecially for the lighter ones, so they cannot be used for other armies of the same period.

In the pictures, the 6lb gun, the bataillon 3 lb guns, again 6lb, the heavy mortar, the caisson and the limber.

La corte di Pietro il Grande - Novità dalla Strelets. Court and Army of Peter the Great - New from Strelets

Strelets presented on his site the master of its future box "Court and Army of Peter the Great". We have always recognize that Strelets has great ideas and very interesting and original subjects for its boxes. However, sometimes, a good will is not synonimous of excellence. Putting aside any confontation with the quality of Zvezda miniatures, these masters are, how to say, a little embarassing.
First thing first: the box says "Court and Army of Peter the Great" but there is no trace of any Army member, apart some nobles that can be used as high officers. May be that these figures will be included in a box togheter a collection of figures coming from other boxes, as Strelets has recently made with Swedish ("From Narva to Poltava" box).
The nobles: not so bad, but some anatomical details are unproportioned, especially heads and/or feet. The tricornes are ridicolously small.
Then there are two ladies: I really cannot imagine how to use them on a wargame table, but Strelets does not produce only for wargamers, that's obvious. The same is for four duellis, but here is the problem of their weapons that resemble more Roman gladios than long and tapering rapiers (the same happens for the sword of some officers).
Last group includes a drunk cossack, having its face illegible and somthing strange on its head (an upset pail? a wooden cup with an handle?).
Ok, let's wait that the box will be released, next october, before a definitive judgement; however, even praising Strelets for producing these kind of "difficult" and fashinating subjects, I deem they have still to work on them.

300 anni dalla Poltava - 300 years since the Battle of Poltava

"2009 is year of 300 anniversary of the battle of Poltava. It was triumph for Russians and defeat for Swedes, but it is a great memorial date for everyone interested in history. Throughout several years reenactors from all over the Europe were preparing for visit to Poltava to commemorate the date and stage battle reenactment. Spring 2009 was full of hopes and preparations, as our Ukranian friends were working hard on the organization of the reenactment. Several weeks before the planned day of reenactment Ukranian government directly prohibited staging any military-historical activities of the battlefield. Basing on the fact that part of Ukranian cossacks betrayed Tsar Peter and went over to Swedes, "celebrating of Russian victory would be insulting to their memory" (sic!). Local Poltava authorities were still willing to present some show with historical costumes but they never provided any support for reenactors. Thus reenactment in Poltava didn't take place, groups from Russia, Ukraine and Baltic had to stay at home and our colleagues from Sweden and Finland, who booked tickets in advance, went to see the field as a tourists.
In Moscow they prepared show for Moscow mayor with modern army dressed in costumes borrowed from a film studio; this event didn't involve reenactors nor it was too historically correct in many ways.

In St.Petersburg Tsar Peter ordered to build a church in memory of Poltava victory - it is St. Sampson Cathedral. So Poltava commemoration in St.Petersburg in 2009 was linked to 300 anniversary of the cathedral.
And it became the only 'Poltava' event where reenactors took part.

Since we were deprived of reenactment in Ukraine on the historical battlefield, almost all reenactors from Russia and neighbourhood gathered in St.Petersburg. It turned to be the largest gathering of Russian GNW reenactors ever."

From: "Preobrazhensky Life Guards" site

What a pity! Nothing to compare to Austerlitz anniversary in 2005! There were thousands of renactors coming from all around Europe and a very impressive audience (I was there!!!)

As we have already noted in a previous post, not every russian infantry rgts wore green uniforms. Someone, like the Kievsky rgt, wore red uniforms with yellow turnbacks facings. So, I have painted 2 btg from Zvezda miniatures with this pattern. Moreover, I have made small changes with some figures, exchanging muskets with pikes in some kneeling figures and trasforming a fusilier in a standard bearer. The flag comes from the Osprey about Peter the Great's Army (1) Infantry so like the informations about uniforms.
Next "Russian in red" coming will be the fantastic artillery from Zvezda, actually in preparation...
